Getting Going

What Are The Best Washers And Dryers?

It’s worth noting that washer & dyer bundles can sometimes be cheaper than buying two independent units, however, bundles are not always an option.  Below are 5 top washers from 2015 that all provide something a little bit different than their peers:

Speed Queen AWN432S

Our first washer is one of the highest rated washers on the market.  A large majority of customer reviews make mention of the automatic balancing system being extraordinarily helpful in providing a thorough and deep cleansing. This washing machine is for those who like their machines simple yet convenient for a price they can afford!

Speed Queen AWNE82SP

Another top rated machine from Speed Queen, this machine has loads (excuse the pun) of cool features.  The time display completely eliminates the guesswork involved in your laundry, you’ll know exactly when your load of clothes will be ready to put in the dryer.  The no lid lock allows you to stop your cycle at any time, and the stainless steel tub provides a dependable and effective clean.

Frigidaire FAHE4044MW

This modern washing machine from Frigidaire is renowned for its innovative style choices and convenience.  The glass top allows you to check on your load at any given moment, and the Immersion Care system pushes water and detergent gently through your clothes for a super thorough cleaning!

Midea 2.0

This washer is for those looking for a smaller, more portable option.  The Midea 2.0 is just under 7 pounds and can fit in the tiniest areas of your home for maximum convenience.  Despite it’s small size, this washer is no joke.  It will clean your clothes  very efficiently according to most reviews, as long as you can deal with the smaller load sizes.

GE Top Loader

This washing machine has been given nothing but good reviews by fellow customers.  This washing machine has a comparatively larger capacity than the other washers while still being lighter and in some cases cheaper.  The sole knock on this washing machine is that this machine can sometimes be a bit loud (probably the 4.6 cu. foot steel drum being banged around).

Moving On

Now that we’ve looked at some of the different washer options on the market, it’s time to decide how we’re going to get those clothes and other laundered items dry!  Buying a dryer can seem overwhelming, especially if it’s for the first time.  It doesn’t have to be!  We’ve got 5 great dryers below all at different price ranges and with different features to help find the perfect dryer for you!

Speed Queen ADG3LRG

This dryer has received overwhelmingly positive reviews on every major appliance review website.  This dryer is the most expensive on our list, but with good reason.  This dryer has an adjustable end-of-cycle buzzer for maximum convenience, as well as other convenient features like automatic dry cycles and a secure lint filter to prevent unwanted lint all over your laundry.

Amana NED4655EW

Although this dryer is priced at mid-range, it has received nothing but top reviews since being released by Amana.  The reversible doors make getting your laundry out easy wherever you install, and the 4 pre-programmed dry cycles work great for clothes and especially great for towels and linens.  One noted downside of this dryer is there is no buzzer or alert sound when a cycle has completed.

Midea 2.0 Cu. Ft. Dryer

This option is for people who like something light, portable, and vent-less.  Although the vent-less dryer can greatly increase your lint production, it can also quicken drying times drastically.  This mid-range dryer is for people who are concerned with getting their laundry dry in a hurry.  As a bonus, the unit is light enough to move around if necessary.

GE 7.0 Cu. Ft Dryer

This dryer from GE (General Electric) is perhaps our best combination of price and quality for those looking to start a new home.  Reasonably priced, this dryer also has a 1 year manufacturer warranty that guarantees replacement should anything go wrong within that time.  Having that peace of mind is its own reward.  This dryer has received great reviews regarding its drying speed.

Panda Portable

This portable dryer from Panda is by far our most inexpensive option on the list.  At a shockingly low 44 lbs, this dryer can be taken anywhere that you can fit it!  It can even be wall mounted in your home.  The transparent door allows you to check in on your laundry at any time, however there will be significantly smaller load size to the capacity of the dryer.

Pressure Cooker Short Ribs For A Savory Dinner

Getting Started

Pressure cooker short ribs are a great meat and protein option to accompany other dishes for delicious full meals. You can pair ribs with rice and greens, macaroni and cheese with broccoli, or a nice, hearty salad. It’s good to know how to cook ribs in a pressure cooker while getting full flavor out of your meal.

Below are some tips for cooking your pressure cooker short ribs, according to About Food.

Pressure Cooker Short Ribs Tips

  • Prep the short ribs by cleaning and trimming fat.
  • Flavor ribs with a dry rub.
  • Searing ribs lightly helps retain their structure.

In a pressure cooker, your short ribs should be at least two to three inches thick. To ensure that it is cooked properly, put on the timer for 50 minutes. Also, the recommended pressure release method is a Natural Pressure Release, according to Cuisinart.

Recipes

There is no need to feel limited when cooking your pressure cooker short ribs! There are endless choices of different spices, vegetables to add flavor, and sauces to liven your meal. Below are different recipes for pressure cooker short ribs.

Pressure Cooker Cola-Braised Beef Short Ribs

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 4 to 5 pounds English-cut beef short ribs, cut crosswise into 2-1/2-inch-long pieces
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 6 medium garlic cloves, peeled and smashed
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, small dice
  • 2 cups cola (not diet), such as Coca-Cola
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Directions:

  1. Combine the salt, paprika, black pepper, cayenne, and cumin in a small bowl. Evenly rub the spice mix on all sides of the ribs; set aside.
  2. Heat the oil in a 6-quart stovetop pressure cooker over medium heat until shimmering. Working in batches, add enough short ribs to cover the bottom of the cooker without crowding them. Sear, turning occasionally, until the ribs are browned on all sides, about 6 minutes. Transfer to a large plate and repeat with the remaining ribs.
  3. Add the garlic and onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 4 minutes. Add the cola, soy sauce, and Worcestershire and, using a wooden spoon, scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the pressure cooker.
  4. Return the ribs to the pressure cooker, turn to coat them in the sauce, and lock the lid in place. Increase the stovetop heat to high and bring the cooker to high pressure. Reduce the stovetop heat to medium and cook for 30 minutes, adjusting the heat as necessary to maintain a visible, steady stream of escaping steam. Meanwhile, set a strainer over a large bowl; set aside.
  5. Remove the pressure cooker from the heat and allow the pressure to come down naturally for 15 minutes.
  6. Carefully quick-release any pressure left in the cooker, then remove the lid (keep your face away from the escaping steam).
  7. Transfer the ribs to a large plate and set aside. Pour the liquid through the strainer and return the contents of the strainer to the pressure cooker. Using a large spoon, skim off and discard the fat from the strained liquid and return the liquid to the pressure cooker (alternatively you can use a fat separator).
  8. Return the pressure cooker to the stove over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Place the cornstarch and water in a small bowl, whisk to combine, and add half of the mixture to the pressure cooker. Cook, whisking constantly, until the sauce is glossy and thickened, about 30 seconds (add more cornstarch mixture as necessary if you want a thicker sauce). Remove from the heat, add the reserved ribs, and turn to coat them in the sauce. Serve immediately.

Barbequed Short Ribs

Ingredients:

  • One rack of baby back ribs, three to four pounds
  • 1/2 cup beef broth (or other liquid)
  • 1/2 tablespoon liquid smoke — Koslowski prefers mesquite flavor
  • Barbecue seasoning to rub on the ribs before cooking

Directions:

  1. Chop the rack of ribs into four pieces and rub them with your seasoning. Pat it down into into every little nook and cranny.
  2. Place the ribs in the pressure cooker, arranged in a fan or teepee shape so that they’ll fit and steam equally.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of water or stock (Koslowski uses homemade pork stock, but you can also use beef broth) and 1/2 tablespoon liquid smoke to give the meat a proper barbecued flavor.
  4. Lock the lid down and set the cooking time to 30 minutes. (If you’re using a stovetop pressure cooker, follow the manufacturer’s directions).
  5. While the ribs are cooking, make the barbecue sauce — or if you’re using bottled sauce, kick back and have a beer.
  6. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
  7. When the 30 minutes are up, release the pressure on your cooker, unlock the lid and use the tongs to arrange the ribs on the foil-lined baking sheet.
  8. Brush the ribs with the sauce and bake for 8-10 minutes on each side, turning once, until the sauce is burnt and sticky.

Getting Informed

Never go into a purchase knowing nothing about the product, its capabilities, or its long term durability. According to Steve Sheinkopf of Yale Appliance and Lighting, these are also some other things to consider when looking for a new cooktop:

  • Cleanup
  • Burner layout
  • Controls
  • Appearance
  • Longevity

Cleaning Your Gas Cooktop With Griddle

You want to look closely at the instructions for the gas cooktop with griddle so you’ll know both how long the cleanup will take and what cleaning products you’ll need. You won’t want old food to harden and become difficult or impossible to remove. Ask yourself: Is the surface easy to clean? What is the estimated cleanup time? What can you use on your cooktop? How often should you clean your cooktop? How long does it take to cool down so you can clean it?

Burner Layout

In this case, there would be four burners and a griddle in the middle for pancakes, bacon, sausage, etc. You want to make sure of what you’ll need from your purchase to decide on what to purchase. Along with layout, observe if they have the bright, yellow label on it that signifies energy savings. Also look at the perks of having a burner layout such as this one as this layout creates a whole plethora of meal options..

Controls

With any appliance you purchase, you want to make sure you have a good understanding of how the appliance operates.  Your gas cooktop with griddle is no different. Once you have a list of needs you want from your new cooktop you’ll be able to compare ranges to your checklist for easy reference.. Controls are important because you want them to be easy to access and durable so they don’t break easily. Always buy with the brain to avoid causing your wallet more pain!

Appearance

The finish of your gas cooktop with griddle is very important because you want it to match the rest of your home’s theme. You would want stainless steel if your kitchen has a darker theme for example.  Finding out what ranges will fit your current theme will help avoid awkward clashes later.

Longevity

How long will your purchase last? This is a very important question not only because you want to make sure your purchase will last, but because shopping at the right time of year can save you a fortune.. If you shop online, pay attention specifically to thursdays and the end of the month!.

Cleaning Continued

If you plan to purchase a gas cooktop, you need to know how to clean it. There are different methods to clean your gas cooktop with griddle, according to Thermador.

According to Thermador, you should never use a cleaning agent while the gas cooktop is hot because of hazardous fumes that could be bad for your health.

If you have a stain that won’t come off with just regular cleaning, you have to remove the grates after they cool down and use something mild to clean it and it should come off. Stainless steel is a great look to have in your kitchen as long as it’s clean!

To clean stainless steel, Thermador states that a mild cleaning solution such as mild soap and water will do. You have to wipe in the direction of the steel grain when washing and drying and once you’re done, dry it well so there are no watermarks. Also, don’t use harsh cleaners on stainless steel because it is very damaging.

When you’re cooking, the grates to place your pots on can easily get dirty with burnt particles from spills. If you don’t clean them as soon as the spill occurs and the cooktop cools down, it could be harder to get food particles off later. Mild, soapy water is the key to cleaning a gas cooktop with griddle.

Because a gas cooktop with griddle gets extremely hot while it cooks your food, it’s good to clean the surface and knobs of any dust or other particles because you don’t want to start a fire that you may not be prepared for.

Thermador also states to never use flammable cleaning supplies on the gas cooktop to avoid catastrophes.

Proceed With Confidence

Now that you know what to look for when thinking about purchasing a gas cooktop with griddle and how to clean a gas cooktop, go window shop online and in store, pay attention to your budget, compare prices and products, and make a purchase!

Which 40 inch electric range is right for me?

When purchasing a 40 inch electric range, there are some things to know before you make the financial commitment. According to Consumer Reports, most electric ranges normally have smooth tops (replacing the old coil design) that drastically reduces cooking time because it generates heat directly to the pot or pan and offers more precise control over the cooking process.

Budget

Having a realistic budget for your electric range is essential.  Besides the cost of the range itself, other factors can impact your finances such as the long term energy efficiency of your range, or even the cost of installation.  Determining accurately what you can afford is the first step in narrowing down which range is right for you.

Style

According to Rebekah Zaveloff of Houzz, matching your electric cooking range with the existing theme of your kitchen can be just the home improvement to wow visitors!. When considering what style of range you would like, think about the theme of your home. Is your home more modern? Is it more traditional? Once you’ve considered what the theme of your home is, or what you want it to be, you can look at what ranges fit that particular aesthetic.. Zaveloff lists different style of ranges for homes such as:

  • Stainless Steel
  • Commercial-style
  • Contemporary
  • Vintage
  • Antique
  • European cast iron

Personalized Features

According to Ian Logue of State Street Discount, there are other things you need to consider when thinking about the specific features you want your 40 inch electric range to have:

  • What kind of top do I want? Glass top or coil top?
  • Which burner configuration do I want?
  • Do I want convection or not?
  • Is it required for my range to have a warming drawer?
  • Do I want slide in or freestanding?

Burner Configuration

According to Logue, there are a plethora of options, but the most common choices are 6-inch, 9-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch options. The best way to figure out what burner configuration you want is by measuring your big and small pots to see what will work best for you.    Remember to buy a burner that has received good reviews for durability, besides the hit in your cooking schedule, your wallet will pay the price if your burners are poor quality.

Convection

Logue states there are several benefits to having a convection oven and it depends on how you’ll be cooking most of your meals. There are benefits to having a convection-style range:

  • Cook multiple trays of food
  • Food can cook evenly
  • Utilize more oven space
  • Lessen cooking time

Other Prime Features

According to Consumer Reports, there are other features for your 40 inch electric range that you would want to consider:

  • Control lockout
  • Digital display
  • Double ovens
  • High-power elements and burners
  • Hot-surface light
  • Low-power simmer burner
  • Raised edge around the cooktop to avoid spills on the floor
  • Self-cleaning cycle
  • Five or more oven rack positions
  • Time/delay start

Save Your Energy!

Besides doing your part for the environment, being as efficient as possible with your energy will help limit your utilities bill every month. According to Paige Terlip of Energy.gov, there are several tips to consider when thinking about saving energy and enjoying the appliances you purchase:

  • Are all of your appliances energy savers with the yellow sticker?

Why is my air conditioner freezing up?

The first thing you need to do once your air conditioner freezes up is figure out what precisely is causing the problem. According to Angie’s List, ASM Air, Horizon Services, Inc., Bryd Heating and Air, and Doug’s,  there are a few reasons why your air conditioner is having a malfunction:

  • Blocked air flow
  • Refrigerant Leaks
  • The Joule Thomson Effect
  • Outdoor temperature
  • Closed supply registers
  • Drainage problems
  • Improper installation
  • Malfunctioning fan
  • Nighttime use

Blocked Air Flow

If you’re having problems with your air conditioner freezing up, it may be due to a dirty air filter. If no air is blowing through, then your air conditioner won’t be able to do its job to cool down your house.  Making sure this is clear and free of dust and other particles that can prevent air flow usually solves this problem.

Refrigerant leaks

Unfortunately, this is the “engine” version of an air conditioner.  If your refrigerant is leaking, you will probably have to replace the unit.

The Joule-Thomson Effect

This effect is a theory in thermodynamics that states if all other variables remain constant, then as gas expands and its pressure decreases its temperature will also decrease, according to Tim of ASM.

This is how an air conditioner works, the evaporator coil expands the refrigerant inside it causing the coil to cool rapidly. Once the cooled coil comes into contact with the air in your home, it cools it down and repeats the cycle while cooling your home.

Outdoor temperature

According to Horizon Services, air conditioners do not do well in low temperatures that are below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Closed supply registers

This deals with the vents you keep open and closed. You should never have no more than one-quarter of your house’s air vents closed. If you have too many air vents closed, that could put a strain on air flow and a strain on your wallet when you have to get your air conditioner fixed.

Drainage problems

The evaporator coil removes heat and moisture from the air before cooling your home. The air conditioner condenses a lot of vapor into condensation that many not be properly draining outside and the collected condensate could be causing the issue..

Improper installation

The proper way for your air conditioner to be installed is to be tilted slightly so the part that goes indoors is a little higher than the part that goes on the outside. If this doesn’t happen, then water can’t exit which will lead to a collection of water and your air conditioner freezing up.

Malfunctioning fan

Just check the speed of the fan to ensure that it’s going fast enough (high speed) so the air conditioner won’t freeze up.

Nighttime use

Don’t let the conditioner run all night because it will waste energy, money, and also be at more of a risk of freezing up in the future.

I know my problem, how do I fix it?

Now that you have an idea of why your air conditioner is freezing up, there are some solutions to get your home cooled again in no time. Once you see that the airflow from the air conditioner is minimal, you should take these steps, according to Doug’s:

  • Turn off the air conditioner.
  • Make sure your window unit is tilted downward so the melting ice will drip on the ground instead of in your home.
  • If you can reach the air conditioner, make sure the drain hole isn’t being blocked by anything.
  • Run the air conditioner’s compressor fan to expedite the thawing process.
  • Consider removing water with a shop vacuum.
  • After taking these steps, you should be able to turn on your air conditioner on and it should work properly.
  • Also keep a close eye on it in case it happens again.

There are also preventative measures to make sure you lower the risk of your air conditioner freezing up, according to Byrd Heating and Air:

  • Check refrigerant levels
  • Change the air filter monthly
  • Keep at least more than one-quarter of all the vents open
  • Have the fan speed increased
  • Have the thermostat checked
  • Inspect the condensate drain weekly
  • Make sure your unit is installed properly

Cool Down

Now that you know how your air conditioner cools your home, the problems that could cause an air conditioner freezing up, and the solutions to allow you time to prepare yourself for making a new purchase, you’re equipped to become handy and resourceful and wise about your air conditioner.

Why Should I Go Small?

You may be a college student, house owner, or apartment owner who wants something that isn’t as heavy as midsized and large microwave but still gets the job done. Any and every purchase is important because it is something you’re going to place your time, energy, and money into getting for your living area.  Appliances, and microwave sales by extension, are even more significant because of how long the consumer typically expects them to last and how expensive each appliance is.  Even though you may just want to get the long process of comparing price, there are few things you may want to consider before jumping straight into making a purchase.

Asking The Right Questions

You should ask yourself these questions before buying the best small microwave:

  • What is the power rating?
  • What is the size in cubic feet?
  • What is the wattage?
  • Does it have a good sensor to prevent overcooking and undercooking of the food?
  • What are all the shortcut keys?
  • Does it have a good numeric key pad that doesn’t break easily?
  • Is the turntable working properly?
  • How long will it last?

It’s important to ask all of these questions because you want to know how your microwave will perform before you buy. It is also a good idea to look at customer reviews and compare several options to immediately rule out the ones that aren’t compatible with your needs and price range. It is very important to know how long your purchase will last so you if you have to buy a new one, you can save money by buying one at the time when the prices are the lowest, as well as giving yourself the longest amount of time possible to save!

Basic Guidelines

According to Wise Geek, you want to get a small microwave that is at least 0.7 cubic feet (cu. ft.). Determining the amount of wattage you need for your cooking needs depends on what you plan to do with your microwave. If you’re only using it for small things, 600 or 700 watts will do, but for other needs you may need something with more watts to properly cook your meals.

To better know which best small microwave you want to purchase, it’s good to know the science behind how the food you digest is being heated and cooked, according to Chris Woodford of Explain That Stuff.

The Science

Microwaves cook food quickly because it channels heat energy directly to the molecules that make up the food you’re cooking! Inside the microwave is a magnetron, microwave generator, that takes electricity from the power outlet and converts it into high-powered radio waves. These radio waves are sent through a channel known as a waveguide to your food. This is where the turntable comes in because it turns your food slowly so it cooks evenly. The microwaves bounce off the inside until they hit the food and penetrate it to cause the molecules to vibrate quickly which generates heat, and voila! The microwave dings and your food is hot, ready, and safe to eat..

Now that you know the scientific side of how microwaves heat your food, you need to also know how to stay safe because are harmful to living organisms (i.e. us). Here are few tips to exercise microwave safety, according to Home Wizard:

  • Make sure your food cooks evenly and thoroughly so there are no cold spots in your food where bacteria can survive.
  • Make sure your food isn’t overheated enough to burn you and harm your tongue, lips, or hands.
  • Refrain from using bottles or jars with narrow necks in the microwave because too much pressure can build up inside the container and make it explode.
  • Always turn off or cancel the program timer on your microwave before opening the door on your microwave so a fuse doesn’t blow.
  • Regularly clean and inspect your microwave’s door seal to prevent any radiation from leaking out because microwaves are dangerous to living organisms.
  • Do not use plastic containers or any other container that isn’t specified for microwave use.
  • Do not store anything directly on top of your microwave.
  • Be sparing with using aluminum foil in the microwave or use none at all so you don’t damage your microwave.
  • Never use recycled paper products unless it is specified as safe to use in a microwave.
  • Do not heat water or any other liquid for more than two minutes because if it gets too hot, it can explode out of the container.
  • In case of a fire inside of the microwave, turn it off and unplug it to suffocate the fire because fire needs oxygen to grow.
  • Lift container lids that have been in the microwave carefully so you don’t burn yourself with the hot steam escaping the container.
  • Do not let plastic wrap touch your food while it’s being cooked to lessen the chance of chemicals getting in your food.
  • Keep your face away from the microwave while it’s cooking.
  • Do not fry foods in your microwave.
  • Never try to repair a microwave yourself unless you just happen to be a professional who normally fixes microwaves.

Small Microwave, Big Decision

Now that you’re equipped with questions to consider before buying the best small microwave you can afford, you’re ready to begin the purchasing process!  Realizing your needs and budget as well as reading customer reviews will help you make an informed decision and buy the best small microwave you can!

Looking at this chart, each individual component that should be considered is listed in the first column.. Always know what type of bulb the lamp needs, the power source, color, style, weight, height, and features to get the most out of your money.

Getting Started

There are some tips for lighting to remember when upgrading your home, according to Lindsey Roberts of the Washington Post.

Roberts says to make sure that each room has three or more different sources of light to ensure that everything is well-lit. That also increases safety and lessens risk of injury because you can bump into furniture or fall if you can’t see clearly in dim light.

When thinking about stand up lamps, it’s important to consider the space in which they’ll go.  Are they taking up too much of the room?  Is the lamp projecting light where you and your family need it to?  Asking these questions beforehand can help you pick the perfect stand up lamps for you.

What types of stand up floor lamps are there?

Lamps are made up of different materials such as wood or metal such as brass, bronze, silver, steel, and nickel. When choosing what type of material you want, consider how the room whose lighting you intend to upgrade looks (both in design and space) and choose something that will complement rather than contrast those factors.

Some of the different styles of floor lamps are traditional, torchiere, tree, and arc floor lamps.

Traditional-Style floor lamps

Traditional floor lamps refers to those with a simple design and a classic lamp shade to protect your eyes from the harsh glare of the light bulb. If you want a clean and simple look for your room then this is a great option.

Torchiere-Style floor lamps

Also known as torch floor lamps. These are characteristic for their shade that is inverted and bowl shaped. These types of stand up lamps are great for ambient light. They create ambient light by pointing light from the bulb upwards and letting it reflect off the ceiling which gives the room a warm glow.  These lamps are great for mood lighting.

Tree-Style floor lamps

These style lamps have three or more light sources that are bendable so you can point each small source anywhere to increase the lighting in the room from one stand up lamp. College students and apartment owners would find these useful because they take up little space and can give off a great amount of light.

Arc-Style floor lamps

These style lamps have smaller light sources that curve downward so if you want to read in your armchair, it’s best to have one of these stand up lamps. It is also great to illuminate people’s faces when they are sitting and talking at a gathering or in an intimate setting.

What Now?

Once you decide on which style you want, see how many would be just right for each room in your home, or even if just one type of lamp suits your entire home. You have to think about several things when considering how many stand up lamps to place in each room:

  • Size of room
  • Where shadows will fall
  • Wall color
  • Furniture style
  • Power options
  • Wattage

Size of Room

Even though stand up lamps are easy to assemble and you can move them wherever you like, the size of the room still matters. A small room may only need one or two lamps while a larger room may need three to five.

Where Shadows Will Fall

You don’t want to go through the process of assessing the style and theme of your home, decide which lamp to purchase, assemble them, and place them where you think they would work best only to have shadowy parts in your room where things could fall and be forgotten. You want to arrange your furniture and stand up lamps to illuminate as much as possible without being uncomfortable on the eyes..

Wall Color

This is important because some colors mesh extremely poorly with certain materials. You don’t want to have yellow wallpaper and silver lamps because the clash is extremely off putting to the eye. Get a lamp that will complement your wall colors to ensure a pleasant glow in your home.

Furniture Style

Whether your furniture is wooden or metal, black or brown, you need to know what will complement the furniture in your home. If you have dressers and end tables with marble tops, then you may want traditional, sleek lamps that have complementing colors.

Power Options

Power options refer to battery-operated or corded lamps. Lamps have these two options because consumers may want a stand up lamp to take on the go and batteries allow the consumer to be as mobile as they want to be. Also, if you’re trying to cut down on energy costs, the battery option may be right for you.

Wattage

The higher the wattage, the more energy is needed. To cut down on your energy bills, you may want bulbs with lower wattage to save on money. Some people like higher wattages because they want their rooms in their homes to be brightly lit.  Decide what balance between your energy management plan and lighting ideals works best, and go for it!

Out of the Dark

Armed with this knowledge, decide what lamps would work best for you, your family, and your home.  Correctly approximating your needs will allow you to make a great choice the first time around and avoid any uncomfortable financial learning curves if the lamp you want doesn’t work with your home.  Getting well informed before your purchase may just be the brightest decision you’ve made today!

How Do I Make My Decision?

While also thinking about affordability, you have to also consider other factors when buying an above stove microwave. You need to consider:What’s right for me?

  • Size
  • Appearance
  • Cooking Time
  • Heating Performance
  • Construction

Size

When considering size, you need to look at something that will fit in that space over your stove. Get something to measure the dimensions of the space you want to use and then go to a professional so they can tell you which options you have to select from that will fit your personal dimensions.

Appearance

The first question when thinking about appearance is thinking about the theme of your home and your kitchen. Are you more modern and love the stainless steel look? Are you more old-fashioned and love the classic white microwave to go in your kitchen? Looking closely at how the microwave reflects your personality while also complementing your home is very important.

Cooking Time

This is a very important factor when considering which above stove microwave to purchase. If you want to have food on the go, you have to have an appliance that will cook food fast, but also thoroughly.  Undercooked foods have all sorts of health risks, and making sure that the type of meals you intend to microwave are compatible with your choice is essential. You wouldn’t want a microwave that needs another 20 minutes to properly cook your food right as it’s time to pick up the kids from school.

Heating Performance

This also speaks to how long the microwave you purchase will be able to cook your food. If the heating performance is poor, then it will directly correlate into a longer wait time for your meal. If you don’t realize that your above stove microwave has low heating performance, then you will have meals that won’t be cooked thoroughly and again, could cause safety and health issues.

Construction

You want an appliance that was built to last for a price you can afford. Especially when purchasing a new above stove microwave, always look for customer reviews and ratings because getting the opinions from people who have tried the product first is often the most helpful tool in deciding which above stove microwave could be right for you.. Research the manufacturer you plan on buying from and see how they value their customers and price their products.

Remodeling Options When Purchasing Above the Stove Microwaves

There are remodeling options if you don’t want the microwave to take away from the overall look of your kitchen, according to Remodelista. Contrary to popular belief, it is still quite possible to own an above stove microwave and have a pleasing kitchen atmosphere simultaneously.

You can hire someone or perform a do-it-yourself project (DIY) where you place the microwave in a cabinet above the stove and that way you can close the cabinet and still have more space. It is another way to make your kitchen space pleasing to the eye while still maintaining optimal functionality.

Extra Tips To Think About When Buying Above Stove Microwaves

You should only keep a microwave oven for nine years before having to replace it. Always read the directions before using your microwave to ensure safety, according to US News.

Linda Thomson of Top Ten Reviews has other tips for those who want to purchase an above the stove microwave.

  • Make sure it is installed properly.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s directions.
  • Don’t use single-use plastic containers:
    • Styrofoam containers
    • Plastic tubs for dairy
    • Plastic bowls
    • Plastic utensils
    • Plastic cups
    • Use water with lemon juice or vinegar and place in a bowl.
    • Put the bowl in the microwave oven on high and let the steam fill the interior.
    • Let it cool down and then wipe out your appliance.

Safety Tips When Using Your Microwave

Once you make your purchase of an above the stove microwave, you need to follow certain tips to keep yourself safe and protect your purchase, according to Samsung:

  • Avoid placing metal or foil items in the microwave.
  • Stir your food periodically as you heat it in the microwave.
  • Don’t microwave your food for too long to avoid flame hazards.
  • Keep the cord away from water or other liquids.

Ding! Your Advice Is Ready

When thinking about purchasing an above the stove microwave, consider all the variables we’ve discussed in this article such as: pricing, customer rating, manufacturer values, color options, performance options, cleaning needs, safety measures, and fire hazards. Life isn’t going to suddenly get less busy and purchasing the right above stove microwave could benefit you in countless ways.  Try one for yourself and see!

What are the different parts that make up a pressure cooker?

While trial and error may be the method consumers are originally drawn to, spending the time to learn about your pressure cooker can make a huge difference.  Both the quality of your food and the overall life of the cooker can be very easily improved by arming yourself with the knowledge to stop problems before they occur.

These are the parts that are on a pressure cooker, according to Mrs. Vickie:

  • Sealing ring
  • Over pressure plug
  • Pressure regulator
  • Vent pipe
  • Air Vent/Cover lock
  • Lock pin
  • Cover handle
  • Cooking rack (inside)

How does a pressure cooker work?

A pressure cooker is essentially just a pot with a semi-sealed lockable lid and a valve that controls the pressure inside, according to Nathan of Modernist Cuisine.

A pressure cooker has “pressure” in the moniker for a reason. The semi-sealed lid and the valve work capture steam so it can’t escape. When steam can’t escape from a pot on the stove, it boils over. However, with a pressure cooker, it contains the steam and all of that steam builds up the pressure inside. This results in the increase of the boiling point of water and decrease the amount of needed cooking time, according to Nathan.

Now here is the step-by-step explanation of the magic behind pressure cookers, according to Modernist Cuisine:

  1. High-pressure steam rapidly transfers heat to the surface of any food not submerged in liquid.
  2. A spring-loaded valve is typically open so that air can escape. As heating begins, expanding vapor pushes this valve up, closing off the vent. (At very high pressures, it rises farther and reopens the vent to release excess steam.) The valve continues to monitor and regulate the pressure inside the cooker to a preset level: typically 0.7 or 1 bar / 10 or 15 psi above atmospheric pressure; this value is called the gauge pressure. At these elevated pressures, water boils at 114 °C or 121 °C / 237 °F or 250 °F, respectively. As soon as the cooker reaches the correct cooking pressure, reduce the heat to avoid overpressurizing it.
  3. The sealing ring, typically a rubber gasket, prevents steam and air from escaping as they expand. This causes the pressure in the vessel to build as the temperature rises. Any food particles stuck in the seal can cause it to leak steam, so check and clean the gasket regularly.
  4. The lid locks with a bayonet-style mechanism that pushes against the sides of the cooker. Frequent overpressurization can damage this mechanism and render the cooker useless. Other designs use bolts that clamp around the outside.
  5. The handle locks as well, to prevent the lid from opening while the contents are under pressure.
  6. There is too much liquid in this cooker. Generally, you should fill the pot no more than two-thirds full.
  7. Water vaporizes into steam, increasing the pressure inside the cooker as it heats.  Because the boiling point of water depends on pressure, it rises too—just enough to keep the water and steam temperature hovering around the boiling point for the higher pressure. The pressure continues to rise until it is stabilized by the valve.
  8. Add enough water to the pot, either around the food or under a container of food elevated above the bottom of the pot, to enable plenty of steam to form.

What are the different pressure release methods?

When you get your first pressure cooker, there is some terminology that you want to know and remember. There are three different pressure release methods.

According to the Pressure Cooker Critic, the first pressure release method is the natural release method. This takes the longest at about 10-15 minutes and is good for different meats and food that foam. This method does require you to take the pot from the heat source and let it cool down naturally.

The next method is the quick release method. This is good when you want to interrupt the pressure cooker to put in vegetables with your meats, or basically add anything in to a pre-existing stew..

The last method is the cold water release method. This takes about 20 seconds and is accomplished by simply removing the cooker and running it under cold water.. Avoid the vent and valve when doing this method. This is especially good for vegetables so they’re not overcooked.

How does this help my nutrition?

Pressure cookers make meals healthier by not destroying nutrients that typically escape in the steam through other cooking methods. According to Food Renegade, cooking foods for a shorter amount of time preserves nutrients more than cooking for a longer amount of time.

Less water translates directly into more nutrients to feed your bodies many needs. Pressure cookers also makes grains and legumes more digestible by reducing the amount of phytic acid and lectins.

Phytic acid binds minerals and other important nutrients in our digestive tract, keeping us from using them and by reducing the phytic acid content of grains and legumes, we increase their nutrient-availability and render them more digestible, according to Food Renegade.

Carcinogenic compounds such as acrylamides can be found in potatoes when cooked at high temperatures. However, these harmful compounds can’t form in a pressure cooker because of all the trapped steam, yet another significant positive about pressure cookers. Pressure cooking can also increase the digestibility of protein by 84 percent, according to Food Renegade.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late!

Nobody wants to be hosting a dinner party in a few hours and still having to ask how your pressure cooker works.  Arming yourself with the knowledge in this article is the first step in getting the most out of your pressure cooker.

Making Your Choice

There are many different types of commercial sink faucets to choose from when purchasing your commercial sink faucet.  Common examples include: deck mount faucets, wall mount faucets, pot filler assemblies, and pre-rinse assemblies, according to Greg McGuire of The Back Burner.

Deck Mount Faucets

Deck mount faucets attach directly to the sink. These are usually in house, apartment, and dorm bathrooms. These are the standard sink faucets one typically purchases for use in their home.

Wall Mount Faucets

These type of commercial sink faucets are mounted on the wall and the water comes through the backsplash. This type of faucet is commonly found in restaurants.

Pot Filler Assemblies

These commercial sink faucets are specialized and are wall-mounted. They are used for filling up especially large containers with water, which is made possible by a hose or extended spout that swivels.

Pre-Rinse Assemblies

Most consumers aren’t aware that they’re actually supposed to give their dishes a good rinse before putting them in the dishwasher. That’s what these type of sink faucets are there for! However, because of the price, as well as the typically low volume of dishes in an average household, they are usually found in restaurants. This type of faucet helps kitchen staff and waitresses and waiters rinse of dirty plates and utensils quickly before putting them in a dishwashing machine.

With any purchase for your home, you must always watch the price, check your budget, compare styles, and know how to maintain your purchase for the best results on any given day.

Styles of Commercial Sink Faucets

Sink faucets can come in different styles to suit your tastes and your home’s aesthetic theme. The different styles typically offered by most retailers are contemporary, traditional, and transitional.

Contemporary-Style Sink Faucets

These style faucets are characterized by a spout that curves downward and a handle that also turns downward to turn the water on. This style emphasizes simplicity and functionality and is focused less on style.

Traditional-Style Sink Faucets

This style of commercial sink faucets also have a spout that curves downward, but the handle to engage the water can either be solo or accompanied by a hot and cold handle. This style is characterized by select classic designs.

Transitional-Style Sink Faucets

This style of commercial sink faucets is characterized by a spout that curves downward and most transitional commercial sink faucets come with a single handle that pivots to adjust the water temperature. This style is characterized by clean lines, nods to nature, and organic shapes.

It’s also important to look at what finish you want your commercial sink faucet to have. There are many different finishes to complement the style of your home:

  • Black
  • Brass
  • Bronze
  • Chrome
  • Copper
  • Gold
  • Iron

Commercial Sink Faucet Maintenance

Once you get past the fun yet stressful search for the right commercial sink faucets, you need to know how to maintain your purchases and know what you may be able to do yourself and what may call for a professional.

Dripping Sink Faucets

If your sink faucet ever starts to drip, fixing it immediately is essential to consumers who can’t afford to lose money on their water bill. According to Aqua Plumbing and Air Quality Service, a single faucet can send hundreds of gallons of water per year down your drains a drop at a time. That could  sharply influence how much you have to pay for utilities once your faucet begins to malfunction.

However, if you turn the handle to get water to come out of your commercial sink faucet and it only drips, it could be you have low water pressure. The cause of this problem could be due to a buildup of deposits or sediment on faucet aerators, according to Aqua.

Fixing Simple Sink Faucet Problems

There are different ways to repair your sink faucet on your own, according to DIY Network.

Spout O-Rings

If you have to replace a spout o-ring on your commercial sink faucet, you need to:

  1. Remove the grub screw at the back of the spout, then twist the spout to release.
  2. After removing the grub screw, lifting the spout off allows you to gain access to the O-ring which is at the base of the spout.
  3. Once you’ve found the O-ring, cut it off or pry it off with a screwdriver.
  4. Roll on a replacement O-ring to renew the seal, and then align the marker with the groove in the faucet body for reassembly.

Gland O-Rings

If you have to replace a gland o-ring, you need to:

  1. Remove the valve.
  2. Turn the spindle and valve body in opposite directions. This should allow the washer unit to unscrew so you can get access to the gland o-rings.
  3. Cut away damaged rings with a utility knife or break them loose with a screwdriver.
  4. Roll on a replacement and reassemble the valve.
  5. Put the valve back in the faucet body and reassemble the faucet to finish the job.

Reseating Faucets

If you need to reseat your faucet (realign them), you need to:

  1. Remove the valve.
  2. Screw a reseating tool into the thread of the faucet body.
  3. Insert the faucet reseater carefully so that you do not damage the thread for the valve.
  4. Slowly turn the handle of the reseating tool to grind until the surface is smooth.
  5. Replace the valve and reassemble the faucet.

Now that you know some plumbing you can do yourself, you need to also know what’s better left to a professional, according to Aqua:

  • Any installation of new pipes, sinks, or tubs
  • Water heater issues
  • Any new construction that requires building permits
  • Septic tank leaks
  • Sewer line breaks or leaks
