Detoxing your body with daily juices is the same process. Imagine the gunk as toxins in your body. As toxins are released from your organs and blood, they need to go somewhere! That’s why it’s crucial for you to do one of the following techniques to help speed up the flushing process of toxins.

  1. Take an Epsom salt bath for 20 minutes.
  2. Exercise to sweat it out.
  3. Drink a lot of water and tea so you urinate often.
  4. Sit in a sauna.

Starting to Juice

You can pretty much juice all different types of vegetables and fruits. We recommend starting out with:

  • Celery
  • cucumber

Celery and cucumber make a good base since they are easy to digest and are more palatable. They also yield a lot of liquids!

These vegetables aren’t as nutrient dense as the following vegetables below. Once you are more comfortable with drinking green juices, you can advance to the following vegetables:

  • Romaine lettuce
  • spinach
  • cabbage
  • bok choy
  • fennel

And finally the most bitter tasting, yet so full of nutrients is the following:

  • Kale
  • swiss chard
  • dandelion greens
  • collard greens

Storing Your Juice

As soon as your juice hits the air or light, it will start to oxidize and lose nutrients. It is best to drink the juice immediately to reap the benefits. If you are a busy working person (which we all are, right?) you won’t have time to juice every single day. Sometimes it’s necessary to juice double the amount and store it in the refrigerator.

It also depends on the type of juicer you have. With a masticating juicer, you can store your juice for up to 72 hours. With other juicers such as the centrifuge, it is best to drink it within 24 hours.

  • Pour your juice in a glass bottle, or BPA-free bottle with a tight cap. Fill it all the way up to the top!

Limes are packed with vitamin C (ascorbic acid), a natural antioxidant, important for boosting the immune system, protecting against colds and many bacterial illnesses.


Consisting of 90% water, limes are fat-free, have no cholesterol, and when the pulp is left in the juice, it is high in fiber.

How to use lime juice

  • Squeeze some juice into a glass of water, or add sliced limes to a jug of iced water.

Lime juice can improve your skin

  • Dandruff: wet scalp with the juice, and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing with water to reduce or eliminate dandruff.
  • Skin mask for oily skin: combine 1 teaspoon of the juice with 1 teaspoon of rosewater and 1 tablespoon of pureed cucumber. Apply to skin, leave for 10 minutes, then rinse. Do not use this if you have sensitive skin.
  • Scrub for oily skin: combine 1 teaspoon of lime juice, 1 tablespoon of ground oats and 1 tablespoon of ground almonds to make a rough paste. Scrub face and rinse. Do not use this if you have sensitive skin.

Home cleaning tips

  • Odor control: Boil cut limes and juice to freshen up a musty smelling home.
  • Rust: Sprinkle salt on the rust and squeeze some juice on the salt until it is soaked. Leave for a few hours, then scrub the rust away.


Freshly squeezed lime juice keeps in the fridge for up to a week in a tightly sealed container like this one. You can store the juice longer by freezing it in ice-block containers, like these. When completely frozen, store the cubes in a strongly sealed freezer bag. Alternatively, processed juice is readily available, and will keep in the fridge for a month. It is also typically higher in vitamin C.

A Formula For Juice…

We have found that a really good juice contains the following: something sweet, something tart, something high-yield (which produces a lot of juice for its size), something earthy, and maybe something herbaceous or spicy. Earthy flavors include root vegetables as well as greens like kale, spinach, and beet greens. With a general formula like this one, the variations are endless; but here are some of my favorite ingredients from each category.

  • Sweet: apples, pears, grapes, melons, pineapples, oranges, kiwis, mangoes, berries, grapes
  • Tart: lemons, limes
  • Roots: beets, carrots, turnips, parsnips
  • Greens: Kale, spinach, lettuce, chard, arugula, mustard greens, beet greens, dandelion, sorrel, broccoli
  • Herbs: Basil, parsley, cilantro, mint
  • High-yield: Cucumbers, celery, fennel, tomatoes, melons
  • Spicy: Ginger, hot peppers (use judiciously)

Balance Your Ingredients

Cucumbers, celery, and apples are juicing tsunamis; but a little bit of ginger or mint goes a long way. Be aware of the behavior of each ingredient in the juicer (which will be immediately apparent when you’ve juiced it once), and try to maintain a reasonable balance between flexible, mellow ingredients and more intense ones.



Peeling and Not Peeling Produce

In many cases, leaving the skin on the produce you juice is just fine—even pineapple skin can roll just fine through most decent juicers. Especially if you’re using the skin, do be sure to buy produce grown with organic practices when possible. A few exceptions, where you should peel:

  • Kiwis.
  • Produce that’s been waxed.
  • Citrus fruits, if you want the pure taste of the juice without the skin’s oil and the bitterness (it’s fine to juice the whole thing, but it really does change the flavor).
  • Any other ingredient where you’re concerned the skin will affect the taste (for example, you might do a taste test with melons, though it’s technically fine to juice the skins).
  • And, if you’re visually astute or serving to a crowd, any peel that might negatively affect the color of the final juice (say, cucumber skin in a cucumber watermelon juice).
